Have a wonderful Wednesday. u003c/em>u003c/p> u003cp class="p1">u003cstrong>- Torch bearer.u003c/strong> When Yoshiro Mori announced his resignation as Tokyo 2020 u003ca href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-02-12/public-outrage-over-sexist-comments-forces-changes-at-tokyo-2020?sref=AGYpi2Ba">chief on Fridayu003c/a>, he said that it was "pathetic" that one "brief remark" about how women talk too much in meetings had led to his stepping down. u003c/p> u003cp>Mori's comment was u003ca href="https://fortune.com/2021/02/05/tokyo-olympics-chief-women-talk-more-research/?showAdminBar=true">sexist and wrongu003c/a>, but his Friday statement was right in one regard; the comment on its own might not have led to the 83-year-old former prime minister's ouster. But it happened to encapsulate the frustration that women in Japan have been seething with for decades, prompting a torrent of criticism and outrage. u003c/p>u003cp>u003c!-- piano selector -->u003c/p>u003cdiv class="paywall"> u003cp>“Many women who have probably been avoiding talking about gender issues are finally starting to talk," Mari Kogiso, a former Fast Retailing executive, u003ca href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-02-12/public-outrage-over-sexist-comments-forces-changes-at-tokyo-2020">told u003cem>Bloombergu003c/em>u003c/a>. u003c/p> u003cp>Japan ranked 121st out of 153 nations on the u003ca href="http://www3.weforum.org/docs/WEF_GGGR_2020.pdf">World Economic Forum’s global gender gap reportu003c/a> last year, and it's so patriarchal that former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe launched a special initiative called "Womenomics" to elevate women in the labor force and in society in general. (It u003ca href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/09/13/world/asia/japan-women-abe.html">largely failedu003c/a>.) u003c/p> u003cp>Events that followed Mori's resignation illustrate what gender equality advocates in Japan are up against. Initially, there u003ca href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-02-12/public-outrage-over-sexist-comments-forces-changes-at-tokyo-2020">were plans to replaceu003c/a> Mori with another male octogenarian, former soccer player Saburo Kawabuchi, but more public outcry derailed that strategy. Then the Olympic organizing committee said a gender balanced-panel made up mostly of athletes would pick Mori's successor. The u003ca href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-02-12/public-outrage-over-sexist-comments-forces-changes-at-tokyo-2020?sref=AGYpi2Ba">leader of that initiativeu003c/a>? The CEO of u003ca href="https://fortune.com/company/canon/" target="_blank">Canonu003c/a> Inc., Fujio Mitarai, who is 85. u003c/p> u003cp>This week, Japan's ruling party weighed in on the whole women-in-meetings issue. Facing criticism that its board is too male-dominated, the Liberal Democratic Party on Tuesday u003ca href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-japan-politics/japans-ruling-party-wants-more-women-at-meetings-but-stay-quiet-idUSKBN2AH08E">proposed a new planu003c/a> that would allow five female lawmakers to join key meetings—so long as they don't talk. Board members are elected, Toshihiro Nikai, the party’s 82-year-old secretary general, u003ca href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-japan-politics/japans-ruling-party-wants-more-women-at-meetings-but-stay-quiet-idUSKBN2AH08E">pointed outu003c/a>, so the new proposal would be a way for women, who haven't won a seat, to "understand what kind of discussions are happening." Public broadcaster NHK reported Wednesday that Seiko Hashimoto is set to be selected as the new head of the Tokyo Olympics organizing committee. (The selection panel has decided to offer Hashimoto the role; she has not yet accepted.) u003c/p> u003cp>The 56-year-old member of the LDP is Japan's minister for the Olympics and for gender equality. She's also a former athlete, having taken part in seven Games, both summer and winter, as a track cyclist and speed skater.
